From my days as a textile designer, the fluidity and pure color of the Luma Dye was the beginning of a fascination with layers of pigment and relationship of shape.  Working on smooth rice paper, applying dye with a French quill, and observing how one shape affects another on it's surface, helped me to develop a process of letting the design unfold in a spontaneous way.  The value of eliminating and simplifying. The process of taking away and putting back.

In my work as a painter, the views that inspire me are the simple ones. The humble skies, the tender views of marsh, the inner life of the woods. These things tell me about the world today. Whether applying layers of translucent washes of oil or thicker strokes of acrylic, memory combines with the brush.  I can pare away the elements which distract and complicate my vision, while at the same time experiment with glazing, bold color and loose brushwork to achieve a fresh perspective and an aesthetic response.

They say art imitates life.  I agree.  In my own life, especially now, the quest for simplicity is overriding.  This process of creating my own interpretation of a simple moment is what keeps me focused on the final result, and the connection between the literal and the abstract meet somewhere in between.
